Why Should You Blog? Why share your best stuff?

There’s a lot of people who worry about publishing what they know on their website. After all, if you publish everything you know, then why would the reader take the next step to call you and hire you for your services?

But think about it: just because you can cook, does that mean you’ll never go out to a restaurant? Just because you might know how to mow your lawn, does that mean you always want to?

If you’re like me? The last thing I want to do is mow my lawn on a lazy Sunday.  And so too are the people who are your customers. Notice – I said customers. Not readers. Readers may or may not eventually hire you. But customers are seeing your content and saying “man, he knows his stuff. I want HIM to take care of my lawn because I know it’ll be done right!”

Let’s break down some of the benefits of getting your content into the hands of as many people as possible:

Save Money– We’ve already briefly touched on it, but content distribution can cost as little or as much as you want it to. You can do it all yourself and incur very minimal costs. If you outsource some or all of the tasks, it will cost you more…but the benefits can be immense.

Exposure – By distributing your content you can reach more prospects than if you simply published content on your own website. By including promotional information at the end of (or where appropriate) at the end of your content, your brand and website gets more exposure.

Reputation –  Good content builds your company’s reputation. Obviously, if you’re putting out quality content and good information, it elevates your prospects opinion of you.

Expertise – When you provide good information and provide help for people’s problems, they come to see you and your company to be a source of expertise. That is priceless when it comes to acquiring and keeping customers.

Word-of-Mouth – Do good stuff and people will talk about you. Word-of-mouth is priceless for your business and when people talk about your content, all the benefits that come with content (exposure, reputation & expertise) go with it.

So what should you share? What content should you be creating?

Many business owners mistakenly believe that “content” means only articles or just written text. Not so at all. The Internet marketing definition of content has come a long way compared to just a few years ago. In addition to articles, video, audio, podcasts, reports and ebooks can propel your website to the top of the search engine charts and make it interesting to customers who are tired of the same old text content format.

In any case, get your expertise out there. So when that Do It Yourselfer plumber realizes he’s just gotten himself in over his head – he knows who to call!
