Improving Institutional Memory

I remember as a young manager at AT&T and US West, we used to talk about “institutional memory” – usually in connection with people being laid off and how we were losing all that “knowledge” of what had gone before us.

Today – actually the next few days, is Thailand’s NewYear’s celebration clled Songkra. While best known for outrageous waterfights in public spaces, it’s also a day to honor one’s elders – typically by sprinkling refreshing water on them.

For us in business settings in the States – or elsewhere where we don’t celebrate the day – (for us in the States, we’re busily dealing with our taxes) might I suggest something?

If you are so fortunate as to have “old timers” still working at your firm, take some time to get to know how things “used” to be.  As the old saying goes, “those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it.”
